Sanctions Information

The rules regarding sanctions of programs for violations of AMTA rules, including the sanctioning process and process for appeal, may be found in Chapter 9 of the AMTA Rulebook.

Rule 9.5 allows AMTA’s Executive Committee to sanction a program for a violation of any rule occurring at a sanctioned tournament. Sanctionable conduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • (a) Coaching during a round;
  • (b) Physical or verbal abuse of any participant;
  • (c) Intentionally destroying or defacing property, including an opponent’s exhibits;
  • (d) Intentionally engaging in inaccurate time keeping;
  • (e) Intentionally using an ineligible person as a team member;
  • (f) Arriving late to a scheduled event such that the start of a competitive round or draw for pairings is delayed;
  • (g) Violation of the rules regarding case access and case use;
  • (h) Violating the terms of use or rules of any facility where a sanctioned tournament is held;
  • (i) Any conduct proscribed by law.

Possible sanctions include probation; loss of bid eligibility; fines and/or restitution; suspension of a coach or team member; suspension of school membership.  In the event of a fine, programs will not be eligible to register for future years until the fine has been paid in full.  As sanctions are issued, this page will be updated.
